MT4 measured by what it asks of the line

Exness MT4 download on a thin connection: one install, then a price stream

The MT4 installer for Windows comes from the official exness.com and downloads without any login — that part happens once. Everything after it is a different kind of traffic: a running terminal does not keep fetching itself, it keeps fetching prices. This page reads MetaTrader 4 through that split — what the line carries once, what it carries continuously, and what happens to a position when the line stops carrying anything at all.

One-off traffic versus repeating traffic

An installed terminal splits the connection bill in two

Where a connection is slow, unstable, or metered, the useful question is not which operating system a route wants. It is how often the same bytes have to travel again. MT4 answers that question in a way a browser tab cannot: the program arrives once and stays.

The installer is the whole one-off part

A single setup file crosses the line, and after it the interface lives on the disk. Menus, chart drawing, indicator maths and the order window are all local from then on — a reopened terminal does not re-download itself, however many times it is closed and started again.

After that the line carries prices

What repeats every session is market data and instructions: quotes for the instruments being watched, the bars a chart still lacks, an order going out and its confirmation coming back. These are short exchanges, but they are the ones that never stop while the terminal is open.

Chart history arrives in blocks, not continuously

Scrolling a chart backwards asks the server for bars the terminal has not stored yet. Once fetched they sit on the disk, so the same stretch of history is not requested twice. A chart opened and left alone therefore settles down after the first minutes.

Nine chart periods keep the appetite modest

MT4 offers chart periods from one minute to one month — nine of them — and 30 built-in technical indicators. Fewer periods to fill means fewer separate history requests than a terminal that offers more of them, which is one practical reason the older platform sits lightly on a poor line.

Trading is risky whatever route reaches the server, and it may not suit everyone. A steady connection does not make a losing position any smaller.

Windows install, connection permitting

Getting the MT4 setup file across a difficult line

Nothing about the download changes on a weak connection except its odds of finishing. Three habits improve those odds, and one of them matters long after the install is over.

  1. Start the download when the line is at its calmest

The setup file is published on the official exness.com and needs no login to fetch, so the moment is free to choose. A transfer begun while the connection is holding steady is a transfer that does not have to be begun again.

  2. Keep the file after the install finishes

Running the setup takes a few clicks and the terminal opens by itself at the end. The downloaded file is worth keeping afterwards: a reinstall on the same machine then costs nothing on the line, whereas deleting it turns every reinstall into a fresh download.

  3. Sign in with three short pieces of text

MT4 opens File then Login to Trade Account and asks for the MT4 account number, the trading password and the exact server name. All three are text typed by hand — the sign-in itself is one of the smallest exchanges the terminal will ever make. The number and the server are shown in the Personal Area on exness.com; the trading password is set when the account is created and reset there if lost.

A green connection indicator in the lower-right corner means the terminal has a live link to the server. Its absence is a network answer, not a password answer — the difference is worked through in the login guide.

Session traffic, part by part

What an MT4 session actually sends across the connection

Sorted not by feature but by how often each piece has to travel. The rows on the bottom are the ones a metered or fragile line notices.

Travels the line How often it repeats
The terminal itself Once, as the setup file Never again unless the program is removed and installed afresh
Sign-in details Account number, trading password, server name Once per connection to the server — a few characters
Chart history Bars the terminal has not stored yet Once per stretch of history, then read from the disk
Live quotes Price updates for the instruments on the watch list Continuously, for as long as the terminal is open
Orders and confirmations The instruction out, the server answer back Each time an order is sent, changed or closed

Platform specifications are published by the platform developer and by Exness and may change with new releases; how the connection behaves also depends on the network itself. The other three routes to the same accounts sit on the platforms board.

The moment the connection goes

What survives a break, and what was never sent

A dropped line is loud in the terminal and silent on the account. Separating the two is the difference between a calm reconnect and a duplicated order.

Read the terminal from the server side

  • The account does not live in the program. Positions, pending orders and account history are held on the server behind the account number — which is exactly why the same account shows the same positions in the desktop terminal and in the MT4 mobile app. Closing a laptop lid does not close anything on the account.
  • A break stops the picture, not the account. While the connection is down the chart simply stops updating; the terminal keeps trying to reconnect and fills the gap when the link returns.
  • An instruction that never arrived was never placed. An order is only real once the server has answered. If the confirmation never came back, the safe move on reconnect is to look at the open positions list first, before sending the same instruction a second time.
  • Automated strategies stop with the terminal. Expert advisors — the trading robots MT4 is known for — run inside the desktop terminal, not on the server and not in the mobile app. No terminal running means no advisor running, whatever the connection is doing.
  • A second door costs nothing extra. The MT4 mobile app signs in with the same account number, trading password and server, so a phone can pick up the same account while a fixed line is out. Nothing is transferred between them — both simply ask the same server.

Four settings, all local

Trimming what a running terminal asks for

None of these touch the account or the pricing of a trade. They only reduce how much of the connection an open terminal occupies while it sits there.

Watch list

Keep the symbol list short

Every instrument left visible is another price feed arriving continuously. A watch list trimmed to the instruments actually being traded is the single change that most reduces idle traffic.

Charts

Fewer windows, longer periods

Each open chart keeps its own history current. One chart on an hourly or daily period covers a long stretch of time with far fewer bars than the same stretch on a one-minute chart.

Idle time

Close it when nothing is being watched

A minimised terminal is still a connected terminal. Closing it stops the quote stream entirely; reopening it costs the sign-in and the missing bars, and nothing else, because the program is already on the disk.

On a machine where installing is not an option at all — macOS or Linux, where the official MT4 desktop package does not exist — the routes are the browser Web Terminal, which fetches its interface again on every reload, or MT5, which does have official packages for both systems and installs the same way this page describes.

Quick answers

MT4 and the connection: frequently asked questions

Does the Exness MT4 download cost anything?

The installer itself is free and needs no login — it is published on the official exness.com. The only cost attached to it is whatever the connection charges to carry the file. Trading costs are a separate matter and sit in the account pricing, mainly the spread between the buy and the sell price.

Is MT4 lighter on data than MT5?

The older terminal asks for less by design: nine chart periods against 21, and 30 built-in indicators against 38, so there are fewer separate stretches of history to fill. In practice the bigger factor is how many instruments and charts are left open, which is a setting rather than a platform property.

Does the terminal have to download itself again after a restart?

No. The program stays on the disk once installed. A restart costs the sign-in and whatever price history accumulated while it was closed — the interface itself never travels the line a second time.

What happens to an open position if the connection drops?

The position is held on the server behind the trading account, not inside the program, so it does not disappear when the terminal loses its link. What stops is the live picture. When the connection returns, the terminal reconnects and shows the current state of the account.

The terminal shows no connection — is the password wrong?

Not necessarily. A rejected password produces an answer from the server, which means the request reached it. A silent failure with no answer at all points at the network, or at a server name that does not match the one shown in the Personal Area. The login guide separates the two symptoms.

Can MT4 be tried without spending anything on the line first?

The setup file still has to be fetched, but the account behind it can be a demo one: a demo MT4 account with virtual funds is opened in the Personal Area and uses the same market prices as a real account, with no money at risk. How to open a demo →

Does the mobile app share anything with the desktop terminal?

Only the account. Both sign in with the same MT4 account number, trading password and server name, and both read the same server — which is why positions and history match. Neither one sends anything to the other, so a phone is simply a second independent way in when a fixed connection is unreliable.

Is an MT4 account needed, or will any Exness account do?

It has to be an MT4 account. Trading accounts are opened for a specific platform in the Personal Area, and an MT5 account will not sign in to the MT4 terminal. The platform of each account is shown next to it in the Personal Area, where another one can be opened alongside.

The account is the part that does not depend on bandwidth

Opening one is a short form on the official Exness website — an email address, a few questions, and an identity check that finishes inside the Personal Area. It is the one step in this whole route that dislikes being interrupted, so a single connected sitting beats three attempts on a line that keeps cutting out. After that an MT4 account simply waits, and the terminal reconnects to it on whatever link the day provides. Full registration walkthrough →
